A frame is a frame for the most part. The components make the bike. That first bike has Shimano 2200 stuff which is the bottom of the barrel junk. The second has Tiagra which is the lowest you should want to use. Its not great, but totally fine for beginners.
They both have triple crank sets, which is kind of old school unless you're old and have bad knees. Wilmington is kind of flat right? Definitely don't need a triple. Get a compact 50/34 if you're worried about climbs. |

this.
I don't necessarily agree with that, but for the most part I follow you. some brands have thousands of hours and millions of dollars of product design and research, so even if they're made at the same factory as 1000 other brands, the design behind that frame may make all the difference. but yes, the parts overall tend to set the benchmark on price, performance and quality level. spec-wise you want to try to get a better drivetrain over anything else. stems, bars, posts, etc can all be easily replaced bit by bit affordably. quality drivetrains are always expensive to buy on their own, aftermarket. both of those bikes are spec'd with bargain-bin crap for the most part. if you go into a good dealer, you can likely have a much better deal fall into your hands. 2013 models are rolling into shops right now, so 2012 is starting to go on clearance. AND by buying it at a shop, you get a dealer to properly build the bike, size you to it, and warranty the product you buy. |

Jlob- they can't trademark frames, geometry, anything. Granted yes, a big name brand will have access to better materials. You can find knock off Dogmas for a 10th of the price that ride so closely that people get duped into buying fakes regularly.
And you're totally right about getting older models. I got my 2009 Tarmac for 47% off in 2011. |

uh, don't mean to be a dick, but yeah they can. Electra trademarked the whole 'flat-footed' relaxed geometry that made the whole rest of the industry change the geometry of their comfort bikes within a model-year or pay royalties. brands like Specialized even have trademarks on seatstay designs. BMC has a trademarked custom carbon-weave construction for their frames... those are just off of my head. and buying Chinese knock-off frames is like betting with your life. could be 98% quality of the original, or could be unsafe at any speed... |

My team's captain told me they could not. I'll ask him about the things you mentioned. Riding anything is better with your life. My friends Cervelo R3 fork snapped on him on a descent. It was a few months old :( |

They definitely can. Look at the Specialized lawsuit where former employees left and started a company. Specialized sued them for copying design elements that were proprietary.

edited that first post because i have pretty much decided on a specialized allez from the LBS, unless anyone thinks that is a poor decision. other shops in the area carry felt, giant, trek, jamis, surly

I ride a low end Allez and its been good for me. I don't do anything crazy, but it's ridden well and I haven't ever felt like the bike was holding me back or anything.

i ended up getting a specialized allez sport, on account of the fact that the new allez compact wont have carbon fork, and the better components on the sport. i know shit about this, but the guy at the shop believed it was worth it to go ahead and drop the extra 200 bucks.
also how in the fuck did i go from buying a $450 bike at the start of this thread to actually buying a $1000 one now.... |

Haha, yeah, that happens real fast. My buddy runs a bike shop, and pulled some prices on bikes that ended up being around a grand. Wasn't sure how much I'd be riding, and then saw one pop up on CL for only 300 so i went for it. Hard to break that to him though...

to be honest though, a grand may be a lot of money out of pocket, but thats about what you're going to spend (at standard pricing at least) for a good bike that will last awhile. don't kick yourself too hard over it.
even if you bought a koolaid bike... |
